Trotternish in North East Skye
Trotternish is the northernmost peninsular of Skye and offers yet another type scenery, with basalt terraces & cliffs and wierd pinnacles.
The Storr and its "Old Man"
One of the best known of the Trotternish pinnacles is the Old Man of Storr, which is visible as you drive along Glen Varragill towards Portree.
Here the Old Man is seen from the road as it passes the Storr Lochs, Loch Leathan & Loch Fada. In Gaelic, Leathan means Broad and Fada means Long.
Lealt Falls
The falls are not visible from the road, which passes just behind them (the road crosses the photograph, just below halfway up). However there is a convenient layby, and a short walk of a hundred yard or so brings the falls into view. In this shot the water was brown with peat stain from recent heavy rains.
The hills of the Trotternish ridge rise in the background.
From Lealt falls the road, which is dual track in this section, continues north along the coast, past the Mealt Falls & Kilt Rock, to Staffin and the northern tip of the Island.
