The 16 miles from Broadford to Sligachan takes you up to and around the Red Hills (sometimes called the Red Cuillin). Apart from small groups at Sconser (the ferry port for travel to Raasay) and by Luib, there are few houses.
Looking across Loch Ainort from just past the tiny village of Luib. This scene shows the main ridge of the Red Hills, with Beinn Dearg (Red Mountain) on the left and Glamaig on the right.
At the head of Loch Ainort the modern road heads past Eas a' Bhradain (Waterfall of the Salmon), up Bruich nam Bò (Slope of the Cows) and over Druim nan Cleochd (Ridge of the Cloaks). The old road takes a longer, lower route around the headland, rejoining the main road by the golf course at Sconser.
This picture show the bridge on the old road. The waterfall is the splash of white just left of centre. The main road passes the base of the waterfall and climbs the hillside on the right.
Just before Sconser is the Isle of Skye golf club. From here you can look North up the coast of Skye and along the Sound of Raasay.
Just across the mouth of Loch Sligachan is Peinchorran, Ben Tianavaig is in the middle distance and beyond that the Trotternish peninsular. To the right is the Island of Raasay.
From here the road follows the shore of Loch Sligachan to Sligachan itself.
