Safety
The excursions described here are mainly short and the objective is often
visible from the road, however it is still wise to be sensibly equipped and
aware of hill safety considerations.
- Always consider the weather. Scotland's weather is best described as changeable and it can change very rapidly. Obtain a good local forecast before setting out and be prepared to change your plans if the weather deteriorates.
- Take the condition and ability of all members of your party into account, both when planning your outings and along the route.
- Be adequately equipped for the excursion. This always means
wearing suitable footware and clothing. On longer routes it also means:
- Food and drink, with reserves.
- Map, compass and the knowledge of how to use them for navigation. The map should be at least scale 1:50000. If you are on or very near the Cuillin be aware that compass bearings can be affected by the magnetic nature of the rocks.
- Plastic bivvy bag
- Whistle (a torch is also recommended). The emergency signal is six blasts on a whistle or six flashes with a torch.
- Leave word of your intended route and expected return. If you do this make sure the person knows you have returned.
